Formally opened by King Felipe and Queen Leticia, it is held over five days that translate into hundreds of opportunities, contacts, projects and deals, for those with high decision-making power in the sector.

One local man in attendance was Guardia Civil Traffic Officer, Francisco Morales, who was on show at the Orihuela stand where he unveiled his new N332 publication ‘ROAD TRIP TO SPAIN’!

Monday’s edition also reports on the ceremony of lowering the Spanish flag that was carried out on the deck of the Naval Patrol Boat “Isla Pinto”, in Campoamor Marina last Tuesday.

We also tell the remarkable story of veteran Dennis Padget who watched the detonation of some of the world’s first nuclear bombs from close by, dressed only in shorts, shirt and a bush hat, after his Commanding Officer suggested there would be no danger, and in sport, while CD Thader started the new year with a win, Glasgow Rangers fell to a defeat by a single goal at La Manga.

A death notice on an Irish obituary website rip.ie has reported the death of Simon Fahy, one of six people facing trial for the 2018 murder of Carl Carr in Torrevieja and it seems that, since reverting to public management, the running costs for Torrevieja Hospital have increased by as much as an extra €100 million which, of course, is coming out of the pockets of the general public, the approximate costs of building a new hospital, or perhaps providing decent healthcare to the region’s elderly population.

A death notice on an Irish obituary website rip.ie has reported the death of Simon Fahy, one of six people facing trial for the 2018 murder of Carl Carr in Torrevieja.

The notice carries his photo, saying that he would be “sadly missed” by his heartbroken mum and dad and other relatives and friends.

The notice stated that he died last Friday, announcing that a funeral would take place privately for Simon, from Loughboy, Kilkenny, for “family and close friends only.”

The circumstances surrounding his death have not been made public, although it is understood it is not being treated as a crime.

The 30-year-old was one of six people, including prime suspect Wayne Walsh, prosecuted and facing trial following a long-running investigation sparked by the January 2019 discovery of Carl Carr’s body in a shallow grave by the AP7 motorway in Rojales.

Police said they believed that Carr was killed in a fight with a knuckle-duster before his body was driven to woods 20 minutes north of his home and buried alongside bottles of bleach that were used at the house in a clean-up operation to hide the crime.

The Civil Guard considers that Fahy had an active part in the crime leading them to issue the warrant four years ago for his arrest in Ireland, for his extradition to Spain, however, the initial extradition request was rejected by Ireland after the authorities said they couldn’t find him at an address they had for him.

As a result, a Spanish judge had just issued a new international arrest warrant against Simon Fahy after declaring him in contempt of court following the earlier failed bid to have him extradited from Ireland. A court official said, “the warrant is still in place and will remain so until the courts here have proof of his death.”

The police investigation states that the alleged murderer was involved in a fist fight with Carl Carr in the house where they both lived in La Siesta, Torrevieja. The dispute took place because Walsh accused his friend of having a relationship with his then sentimental partner, one of the two women who were arrested at the time for cover-up.

It is believed that Carr died in the house where the fight took place and that his body was subsequently moved to the shallow Rojales grave by Walsh and a Spanish friend.

After the discovery of Carr’s body, his mother Marie said: “I believe he was killed because of a romantic triangle, by a man he knew who accused him of dating one of his girlfriends.

“He told me twice in the last conversation we had that he loved me. Those were his last words, ‘I love you Mam’.”

Currently five other accused are on bail, including 35-year-old Walsh who was one of Carl’s flatmates, in La Siesta. Two of the three female suspects include a part-time model and a bar manager Walsh had been romantically linked with. They have not been charged with killing Carl and are instead facing lesser charges including concealment. The trial will be carried out in front of a jury and is thought to be scheduled for early next year.

In March it emerged Wayne Walsh had been re-arrested in Spain as the alleged leader of a drug trafficking organisation.

The Civil Guard subsequently held him on suspicion of leading a gang based in Torrevieja which was using parcel and courier companies to send drugs to the UK, Ireland and the States.

The judicial investigation into the drug allegations is still ongoing but sources said Walsh had also been released on conditional bail in that case.

There will be no expansion of the Aguamarina health centre, the only facility that currently serves Orihuela Costa’s 30,000 + residents. The project, inherited from the previous PSOE government, is not among the priorities of the PP-Vox coalition.

Tragic news unfolded on Sunday morning with reports of at least thirteen deaths following a fire at the Teatre nightclub in the Atalayas area of Murcia. The final total could be higher with a number of revellers still reported as missing.

As the scourge of gender violence continues to claim victims, it seems that this year it is especially prevalent on the Orihuela Costa, after a popular British charity worker was found dead last Friday in her home in Punta Prima’s La Ciñuelica urbanisation.

Scientific experts in Spain warn that they anticipate an earthquake of similar magnitude to the one recently experienced in Morocco, with the possibility of hundreds of deaths, and part 2 of a 4 part series that focusses in the new Animal Protection Law that is about to be introduced in Spain.

  1. The CEO of the Irish airline Ryanair, Michael O’Leary, was attacked in Brussels on Thursday by two environmental activists who smeared his face with two cream pies as they shouted out “stop polluting the environment with your planes.”

O’Leary was preparing to make a statement to the press in front of the European Commission (EC) headquarters, when two activists threw the cakes in his face while saying “welcome to Belgium.”

O’Leary was quick to recover, however, as he told the gathered press, “I have never been so well received. Unfortunately they were environmentalists and the cream was artificial so I invited them to  come to Ireland, where the cream is better,”

Meanwhile Ryanair’s Belgian pilots based at Charleroi airport will go on strike for the fourth time in two months on 14 ad 15 Septembe, in search of better salaries and conditions, as announced by the CNE and ACV Puls unions.

The announcement by the Francophone and Flemish unions came when O’Leary was already in Brussels to give his press conference.

And it seems to be little better just down the road in Torrevieja where “serious breaches” by Acciona, the company in charge of garbage collection, which now absorbs a quarter of the entire municipal budget, is failing to meet almost all control indicators, repeatedly and seriously.

And just when we thought we had seen the back of Covid-19, the Vega Baja Hospital in Orihuela has decided to strengthen it’s sanitary control measures as a result of the “significant increase” in patients admitted with the virus.

There are currently 30 patients hospitalised with the disease. As such the hospital has once again made the use of masks mandatory as well as restricting access to the hospital to a single companion.

Irish people are experiencing the highest levels of loneliness within the European Union, a recent study has revealed.

The study conducted by Alone, a national organization that enables older people to age at home, points out that in Ireland, more than 20 per cent of respondents reported feeling lonely most or all of the time, which is notably higher than the European average of 13 per cent, SchengenVisaInfo.com reports.

Data provided by the same source also shows that the lowest levels of loneliness were found in Austria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, and the Netherlands, all of which reported levels below ten per cent.

As of the first quarter of 2023, Alone’s figures indicate that many older people newly reaching out to the organisation have been facing social isolation.

As a result, 36 per cent of these individuals had not engaged in social activities for more than a month, and a concerning nine per cent had not participated in social activities for over a year.

“The new numbers from this EU-wide survey do not come as a surprise to us ALONE. We know from our numbers that loneliness consistently ranks as Alone’s number one support issue, and it severely impacts our physical and mental health,” Alone CEO Seán Moynihan stated.

Moynihan also emphasised that the government had previously committed to developing an Action Plan to address loneliness through three distinct strategies:

At the same time, he stressed the urgency of the situation urging the Department of Health to allocate resources and expedite the development of the action plan to combat loneliness across all age groups.

According to him, it is essential to mention the provision of funds in the 2024 Budget to finally provide the long-awaited action plan and implement specialised interventions to address and alleviate loneliness in the community.

Moreover, Moynihan called on the Department of Health to collaborate with Alone and the members of the Loneliness Taskforce to address the challenge of loneliness comprehensively and effectively.

The issue of loneliness extends beyond the EU and is also prevalent in the United States. Thus, a survey conducted by Alone in November and December 2022 revealed that over 17 per cent of American adults reported feeling lonely.

Based on the survey, the highest levels of loneliness are observed among specific demographic groups. Young adults under 30 experience loneliness more, with 24 per cent feeling lonely. In addition, individuals from lower-income households earning less than $24,000 per year face a more significant burden of loneliness, with 27 per cent reporting similar feelings.

Gambling has, historically, been a complicated market in Ireland. It hasn’t always been legal, and there are very different rules in the ROI and Northern Ireland. Nonetheless, today, the market is growing rapidly, thanks to a wide variety of factors. The market is expected to continue growing over the next few years and shows no signs of slowing down. While you might automatically think that the online market is the most important reason for this, land-based betting is also on the rise.

Let’s look at the different figures for Ireland’s growing gambling market.

Betting

Betting of one form or another is certainly the most popular way to gamble in Ireland. In 2019 alone, the Irish spent almost €10 billion on betting of some kind or another. This total spent was distributed over an enormous 70% of the population, all of whom bet in some form or another over a year. Naturally, some individuals bet a great deal more than others, but the figure is nonetheless very telling.

The single most popular form of betting, unsurprisingly, is lotteries and scratch cards. Of the 70% of people who gambled in the last year, around 56% of those did so either by buying a lottery ticket or scratch card.

In terms of demographics, the most likely to vote are aged between 53-44, and 55-64. Betting is easily the most well established way to bet in Ireland, whether that’s on the lottery, on sports betting such as on horse racing or on football games. The Irish have been betting in this way for a very long time, and the market is expected to grow to close to €20 billion by 2027.

That said, betting is not the only way the Irish bet.

Online casinos

Online casinos make casino betting more accessible than ever. Land based casinos are, strictly speaking, illegal in Ireland—though that hasn’t stopped establishments from offering betting services through a membership loophole.

But online casinos are becoming more popular all the time. Compared to pre-2020, around half of all casino betting now takes place online. There are over 2,000 operators in Ireland running licensed online casinos, and this aspect of gambling alone accounts for anywhere from €50-100 million per year in gambling revenue.

Online casinos in Ireland are expected to grow by around 10% by 2026. With all this said, there are upcoming regulations to the online casino market in Ireland which may spell trouble for their overall growth figures. It’s naturally very hard to say exactly what these regulations may look like, but at their current pace, online casinos are plainly going to drive enormous growth in Ireland’s gambling market.

So, where does that leave online gambling as a whole?

Online gambling

Online casinos are naturally an important part of Ireland’s gambling market, but online gambling like sportsbook betting is plainly where the real growth is occurring. Online betting sites are advantageous for the players in many ways which has drawn more people to the game. Online betting revenues have been more or less doubling year on year for the last few years. Around €4-5 billion each year is accounted for in online gambling revenue.

Whether that’s betting on the football, the horse racing, or even more obscure niche markets like foreign sports leagues or even reality TV, online betting is enormously popular in Ireland. Online betting for sportsbook or anything else is far more accessible than, say, physical betting shops. Players can easily bet from home with their mobile or desktop devices, and on a much wider variety of markets. Not only that, with the wider markets available, players are more likely to find something they are actually invested in to bet on. If you are not a big football fan, you might be able to bet on your favourite reality show!

What’s particularly important to note about the Irish gambling market is that the Irish are, per capita, some of the most avid bettors in Europe and the world. In terms of the money spent on gambling based on the population, Ireland is the third biggest country in the world for gambling and this figure is growing. This is down, in very large part, to the move towards online gambling and the availability, and increased competition, between betting operators in Ireland.

Whichever area you look at, then, it’s plain to see that it’s all growing. Online gambling has made the activity open to a vastly new market that would not otherwise be able to place a bet or play in a casino. While we can expect the regulations to be shaken up more and more over the years, and this will certainly influence how the market expands and changes, one thing is certain: Ireland’s gambling market will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.
