The Beaches Department of Orihuela City Council has announced the temporary closure of Cala Cerrada beach, located in the La Zenia area, due to elevated levels of water pollution detected in recent environmental tests conducted by the Ministry of Environment and Water.
Detection of Residual Contamination
The closure follows findings from the Bathing Water Quality Control Program, overseen by the Regional Ministry. According to a report issued by the Directorate General of Water on July 1, 2025, the presence of residual contamination was identified in water samples collected from the beach.
A Precautionary and Temporary Measure
As a preventive action to safeguard public health, access to the beach for swimming has been temporarily suspended. Clear signage has been installed to inform the public of the closure. The beach will remain closed until follow-up testing confirms that the contamination has been fully resolved and water quality is back to safe levels.
Routine monitoring is conducted weekly by the Ministry, allowing authorities to respond quickly and prevent further issues.

The Orihuela Beaches Department is working closely with technical experts from the Directorate General of Water to address the situation promptly. Their shared objective is to restore safe conditions and reopen Cala Cerrada beach as soon as possible, ensuring full safety for all beachgoers.
