Torrevieja, 30 October 2025 – The UNED Torrevieja Open University program for seniors will kick off its second course of the year, “Life on the Banks of the Nile in Ancient Egypt,” starting Tuesday, 4 November at 18:30 at the International Conservatory, near Quirón Hospital. The seven-session course will run through 26 November.
Demand has exceeded expectations, making it the most popular course among senior students in Torrevieja. The course is free, and interested participants are encouraged to contact the local UNED office at c.e.torrevieja@elx.uned.es or 603 875 563 for information.
The program will be led by Santiago Mallebrera, an expert in daily life in Ancient Egypt and a veteran of over 40 trips to the country. He specializes in classical Egyptian hieroglyphics and has directed the translation workshop at the Egyptology association ITERU.
Unlike traditional courses focusing on major historical events, this course emphasizes the domestic and everyday aspects of Nile Valley life: family roles, the status of women, healthcare, and even pets—particularly cats. Participants will also explore hieroglyphic writing, beginning with the Rosetta Stone, and study key archaeological discoveries such as Tutankhamun’s tomb.
In addition, the course will highlight how Ancient Egypt has been portrayed in cinema, showcasing classic films like Sinhué the Egyptian (1945), The Ten Commandments (1956), La momia nacional (1981), and Ágora (2009).
The course promises a rich, engaging, and educational experience, blending history, linguistics, and culture to bring the spirit of the Nile to Torrevieja.
