San Javier born central defender Raùl Torrente has been dubbed as the ‘future of  Granada’ by coach Robert Moreno, since the El Mirador born star joined the club.

Torrente made his debut against Real Madrid in February and former Spanish coach Moreno said: “Torrente is a footballer with a lot of potential – the future of Granada.

“He works every day, he doesn’t pose any problems, he is there for whatever you ask of him, he makes an effort and makes him want to.”

Torrente, who started the 2021-22 season in the Second RFEF with the Granada subsidiary, was called-up into the first team squad, amid a plethora of injuries to play in the First Division.

Torrente has First Division games and Copa del Rey Cup fixtures under his belt, following four games with Recreativo Granada.

San Javier club subsidiary coach Popi, who spotted Torrente as a teenager, said: “I told him to come play with the subsidiary, which was in the First Autonomous Region.

“From the first moment he earned the respect of his teammates, who were all older than him.

“He was 15 at the time and he was the only boy on the Murcian first-year youth team.

“Torrente is a very eager, hard-working and respectful boy. We have had the opportunity to work with him and have always had the illusion that he would go far.

“I already told him when he went to Granada that he would become an under-21 international. I am convinced that this season he will achieve it.”

After Popi taking Torrente under his wing as a second-year junior, he was called-up into the Mar Menor first team, in the Third Division.

It was then that Granada took an interest, that has seen interest from other clubs following his arrival.

“He is a footballer with a lot of aerial power – but he is also fast and agile, as he showed against Athletic Bilbao when he had to defend Iñaki Williams. “He still needs to improve with the ball, but he is forceful in the marks. You just have to look at the games he has played against powerful strikers,” said Popi.

Torrente, who started in the Granada line-up against Real Sociedad on February 14 in La Liga, represented FC Cartagena and Mar Menor FC as a youth, making his first team debut with the latter in 2018, as substitute in a Tercera División win against CD Minera.

In 2018, Torrente moved to Granada CF and returned to youth football. He was promoted to the reserves ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Torrente made his professional and La Liga debut on 1 November 2021, replacing Luis Milla in the 3–0 away win against Levante UD.

For the moment Torrente, under contract at Granada until June 2024 after renewing his contract in September 2021, has his feet firmly on the ground.
