T.M.G.S. @ ALENDA GOLF 26/10/16

This course is not on our frequent visit list, but son could be, every time we play here they have made some very subtle changes and for the better I might add. Upon arrival we were greeted by warm hazy sunshine making it a perfect day for golf that is unless your name is Kjell Aasebo.

3Could it have been that we began from tee 10 or was that he was boasting about hitting great balls on the range or that he returned a nett 70 in last week’s competition, well any of the above could be the reason that his tee shot just managed to dribble of the end of the tee ( far short of the ladies tee and we all know what that means!) it even took him 2 more shots to pass the tree in the fairway ( 150m from the tee) but he did manage to score a point, well done Kjell. Let’s hope that you’re in the Vikings team at La Manga playing for the Viking Trophy.

Today’s results: N.T.P.’s Hole 3 T. Roed, Hole 5 L. Holmberg, Hole 13 A. Rixson and Hole 16. 86 years young Tom Jones who’s tee short finished just a few cm’s short for a hole in one. Tom was joined in the “2’s” kitty by John Hettrick and Lennart Holmberg. Our Best visitor was Cecilia Kinnerfelt 30 pts. Bronze cat: 3rd J. Dursley 33 pts, 2nd J. Hillier 33 pts. on L/H 1st Mrs G. Handeland 34 pts. Silver cat: J. Darowszeski 36 pts. 2nd Mrs. K. Alm 37 pts. 3rd J. Hettrick 37 L/H. Gold cat: 3rd D. Cranston 34 pts. 2nd G. Cromm 35 pts. 1st T. Roed 36 pts. BLARNEYSTONE GOLF SOCIETY – PRESIDENT´S DAY

To celebrate our first birthday we held our first ever President´s Day at Roda followed by a presentation dinner at Las Ramblas.

With heavy rain, thunder and lightning forecast it was with some trepidation that we set off for Roda with our waterproof clothing and umbrellas to hand. We needn´t have worried the heavens opened and the Orihuela Costa flooded between the golf ending and the dinner starting, the organisers were very relieved.

LA MARINA GOLF-SOCIETY CAPTAIN’S DAY 2016

The usual format for Jimmy Scott’s Captains Day took place on Thursday with an early competition on the Par 3 course at El Plantio ,followed by breakfast and the premier competition on the 18-hole course.

The Society provided a very acceptable Bacon baguette between rounds and we moved to the main event with much hope. However, 27 holes in a day proved too much for most and scores In general didn’t meet expectations.

fullsizerenderPrize- giving took place at the La Marina Club in the evening where we were provided with an excellent 3-course meal with wine by Helena and her staff ,together with a round of drinks from the Captain. A curiously fun raffle game followed with much hilarity when people’s prizes disappeared from their table and were sometimes snatched back immediately only to disappear again.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable evening thank you Jimmy ,Irene and Elspeth.

Competition results are as follows:

Gold Medal and Captain’s Trophy – Vic Smith  38 points Silver Medal Winner –  Carol Marriner Nearest the Pins – Alan Craig, Vic Smith, Mick Cook and Mark Pope

LAS RAMBLAS GS

Firstly some clarification of last weeks Memorial Day trophy result. Although Doug Wright did have an individual total score of 45 points, as those who know the game will appreciate when a 2 ball better ball is being played not all of those points necessarily appear on the card of the pairing because the other player may either equal or improve on their partners score. In order to avoid any confusion Pete Dunn did score more than the remaining 4 pts in the teams score of 49 pts. Hopefully that clears up any misunderstanding!

On Monday we played a best 2 of 4 with all scores counting on the Par 3’s. The game was won with a very good score of 107 pts by the team of Rod Doel, Olga Douglas, Nick Campbell and John Dobson. Nick Campbell and John Dobson got the team off to a good start scoring 23 pts and 18 pts respectively on the front nine with Olga and Rod cementing that advantage with solid scoring on the back nine. The runners up on 102 pts were Geoff Biggerstaff, Pete Dunn, Alan Douglas and Doug Wright.

On Wednesday we played a Stableford game with a difference since we played from the yellow stakes rather than from the tee positions set by the course officials. This added some 200 metres to the course distance that we would normally play and with only a couple of exceptions the scoring reflected the added difficulty and obstacles encountered throughout the round. Only two players bettered par with Alan Douglas and Geoff Biggerstaff scoring an excellent 37 pts to win Category 1 and 2 respectively. The top 3 players in each Category were as follows:

Cat 1. 1st Alan Douglas 37 pts 2nd Terry Field 35 pts 3rd Jan Svendsen 33 pts

Cat 2. 1st Geoff Biggerstaff 37 pts 2nd Mike Mahony 33 pts 3rd Marleen Billen 30 pts (c/b)

There were four players sharing the 2’s Club rollover: Olga Douglas, Peter Radcliffe, John Dobson and Lindsay Forbes

On Friday it was the final of our Pairs Match Play Knockout competition with Doug Wright and Brian Dent taking on Bryan Neal and Mike Chapman. It was a pretty scrappy affair early on with neither team able to make headway and the match was all square after the first nine holes.

Doug Wright then found his rhythm winning the next four holes and Doug and together with Brian maintained the advantage to take the match 4 & 3. The majority of our members played the ever popular Counter Game where the number of scores is not known until reaching the next tee. The winners with a very good score of 92 pts were Olga Douglas, Terry Field, Ron and Yvonne Phipps. Whilst all of the team played well a special mention goes to Terry Field who had 9 birdies.

Mike Chapman
