More than 10 organisations took part in a two-day workshop in Torrevieja to strengthen addiction prevention, promote healthy leisure and protect children and young people.

The workshop, organised by the council’s Community Prevention Unit for Addictive Behaviours (UPCCA), was held at the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre on October 14 and 15. It formed part of a programme coordinated by IREFREA and funded by Spain’s National Plan on Drugs, supporting Torrevieja’s municipal plan for 2026–2029.

Participants discussed evidence-based ways for public services, businesses and community groups to work together. They focused on local festivals and public spaces, aiming to reduce risky behaviour while supporting cultural, social and sporting activities.

The sessions covered risks linked to alcohol, tobacco, cannabis and vaping, as well as energy drinks, gambling and problematic use of video games and social media. Organisers also worked towards establishing a lasting prevention network involving schools, health centres, sports and cultural facilities, families and young people.

The council also planned a separate group to give families information and tools to encourage healthy leisure choices for their children.
