Orihuela City Council has secured a €21,400 grant from Alicante Provincial Council to support a programme of cultural, musical and theatrical activities.

The funding was awarded under the province’s 2026 grant scheme for municipal cultural, musical and performing arts events.

All ten activities covered by the grant were held during 2025 and were free to attend, subject to venue capacity.

The programme included concerts, theatre and performances staged at venues across Orihuela, including the Teatro Circo Atanasio Die, María Moliner Municipal Library, La Lonja Auditorium and several churches and cultural centres.

Among the events supported was Viva la Pepa Orihuela, a concert exploring the history of Spain’s constitutions, and Para la Libertad, a theatrical production based on the life and work of Orihuela-born poet Miguel Hernández, featuring live performances of songs inspired by his poetry.

Other highlights included concerts marking Santa Cecilia Day and Christmas, a candlelit performance featuring piano, saxophone, percussion, horn and soprano, and an appearance by the Alicante Province Youth Orchestra.

The programme also featured Trio Iremía, whose members come from Switzerland, Australia and Orihuela, as well as performances by local musical and choral associations.

Two events paid particular tribute to Miguel Hernández: the theatre production Para la Libertad and a commemorative concert by Coral Horadada at the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art.

The grant will help offset the cost of delivering activities in Orihuela city and supporting access to free cultural events for it’s residents.
