Free sardines, bread and beer will be served in Plaza Encarnación Puchol, alongside music, a foam cannon and a prize draw for several cured hams
La Mata will welcome the start of summer with its traditional Sardine Festival on Sunday, June 21, bringing food, music and entertainment to Plaza Encarnación Puchol.
The event will begin at 12 noon and is open to local residents, international residents and visitors. Hundreds of people are expected to attend what has become one of La Mata’s most popular early-summer celebrations.
Organised by Torrevieja City Council’s Fiestas Department, the festival is being held in collaboration with the Torrevieja and District Hospitality Association, the local Fishermen’s Guild and the Brotherhood of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
Free sardines, bread and beer
Festivalgoers will be offered freshly prepared sardines accompanied by bread and beer, free of charge while supplies last.
The communal tasting is at the heart of the celebration, transforming the central square into a lively meeting place where families, friends and visitors can enjoy one of the area’s best-established festive traditions.
Music, foam and prize draws
A DJ will provide live entertainment throughout the afternoon, creating a party atmosphere in the square.
A foam cannon will also form part of the programme, offering younger visitors—and anyone else wishing to join in—a fun way to cool down as temperatures rise.
Those attending will also have the opportunity to enter a prize draw for several Spanish cured hams, traditionally one of the most eagerly anticipated features of the festival.
Torrevieja City Council has encouraged people of all ages to take part in the event, describing it as an opportunity to come together, enjoy La Mata’s local traditions and welcome the summer in a relaxed and festive atmosphere.
