Members of Torrevieja U3A, in collaboration with Eurotourguide, recently enjoyed a two-day, one-night trip to the rural Albacete region, taking in aviation, wildlife, dramatic scenery, wine tasting and traditional local food.
The group’s first stop after leaving Torrevieja was Albacete Airport, where members were given a behind-the-scenes look at the workings of the airport, including an informative demonstration at the fire station. Their visit also coincided with an unexpected highlight: a very loud flypast by four Eurofighter aircraft stationed at the airport.
From there, the group travelled on to Alcalá del Júcar, where they enjoyed a picnic lunch on the banks of the river before continuing to a family-run biopark. The park is home to a wide variety of animals living in spacious surroundings, including camels, llamas, donkeys and guinea pigs.
The journey then continued through miles of poppy-filled fields and spectacular countryside before the group arrived at their overnight hotel.
The following day included a visit to Bodega Iniesta, owned and run by the family of the iconic Spanish footballer Andrés Iniesta. Members toured the wine production areas before enjoying a guided tasting session, with advice on how best to appreciate the wines alongside local cheeses and chorizo-style sausages.
Afterwards, the group sat down to a Menu del Día before returning to Torrevieja.
Organisers described the trip as an action-packed two days and “worth every penny”.
