During its Patron Saint Festivities, the city of Torrevieja embraced sustainability with Ecovidrio’s campaign “Fiestas con Eco”, aimed at encouraging residents and festival-goers to recycle glass packaging.

Environmental educators roamed the main festival areas, sharing information about the campaign, engaging the public in games and challenges, and offering exclusive campaign-branded backpacks to participants. Festival attendees were also invited to share their sustainable moments on social media using the hashtag #FiestasConEco.

The results speak for themselves. In 2024, Torrevieja residents recycled a total of 3,153,867 kilograms of glass, averaging 31.4 kilograms per person. The city now boasts 996 glass recycling bins, averaging one for every 100 residents.

Glass recycling in Torrevieja has a significant environmental impact. By recycling glass, the city reduces landfill growth, saves energy, minimizes CO₂ emissions, and avoids the extraction of new raw materials, protecting soil and forests. Recycled glass can be used indefinitely to make new containers without losing quality.

The campaign also forms part of the “Red Fiestas con Eco” network, a platform connecting Spanish municipalities committed to making their festivals more sustainable. Towns that exceed the recycling challenge set by Ecovidrio are eligible for the “Fiestas con Eco” award, recognizing their efforts to combine celebration with environmental responsibility.

Through this initiative, Torrevieja has shown that tradition and sustainability can go hand in hand, turning its beloved festivities into a model for eco-conscious celebrations.
