May 16, 2025 — The Guardia Civil has arrested a suspected foreign terrorist fighter in Guadalajara who had been integrated into the ranks of the terrorist organization DAESH in the Syrian-Iraqi conflict zone. The operation was carried out in coordination with Morocco’s General Directorate for Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The detainee was the subject of an international arrest warrant issued by Moroccan judicial authorities, who accused him of traveling to the conflict zone and joining DAESH. His arrest was made possible through close counterterrorism cooperation between Spanish and Moroccan authorities.
Intelligence officers from the Guardia Civil located the individual and reactivated the legal proceedings pending against him in Morocco on terrorism-related charges.
The monitoring and containment of Foreign Terrorist Fighters (FTF), individuals who travel abroad to join terrorist groups, remain a top priority for both the Guardia Civil and international counterterrorism agencies. These fighters often pose significant security risks upon returning to or entering other countries.
Authorities emphasized the importance of ongoing international efforts to ensure that individuals who left their home countries to join terrorist organizations in conflict zones are held accountable for their actions.
The suspect has been brought before the duty court of the Audiencia Nacional in Madrid, the Spanish judicial body responsible for cases involving international arrest warrants and terrorism-related offenses.
