Orihuela’s Tourism Department has expanded its programme of guided activities with new experiences combining gastronomy, nature, culture and local heritage.
Among the additions are a Baroque Pastry Route and a guided walk offering panoramic views of the Vega Baja from the Sierra de Hurchillo.
The programme will also include special events celebrating Orihuela’s patron saint, World Tourism Day and the European Days of Holy Week and Easter Celebrations.
September begins with Bonanza event
The autumn programme begins on Friday, September 4, with the “Bonanza Dinner”, an end-of-summer event featuring a tasting experience presented by Álvaro of Cerveza Segura. Admission costs €5.
Celebrations honouring Our Lady of Monserrate, the patron saint of Orihuela, will feature prominently during September. A guided visit to the sanctuary will take place on Saturday, September 5.
A special visit to Orihuela Cathedral will follow on Friday, September 18, coinciding with the presence of the patron saint’s image inside the cathedral.
One of the principal new attractions is the Baroque Pastry Route on Thursday, September 10. Appearing in the tourism programme for the first time, the activity will explore Orihuela’s gastronomic traditions from the Baroque period and include a tasting of traditional sweets.
The programme returns to one of Orihuela’s most celebrated cultural figures on Saturday, September 12, with a visit to the Miguel Hernández House Museum.
The visit will include the sensory workshop “Huéleme”, or “Smell Me”, offering participants of all ages a different way to discover the poet’s life and work.
Nature takes centre stage on Saturday, September 19, with the new “Discover the Vega from the Sierra de Hurchillo” route. Participants will be able to explore the landscape and natural surroundings of Orihuela while enjoying views across the Vega Baja.
September’s activities conclude on Sunday, September 27, with a special World Tourism Day route visiting some of the city’s most important landmarks. The experience will end with a tasting session.
Miguel Hernández and Holy Week feature in October
Miguel Hernández will again take centre stage during October to mark the anniversary of his birth. A commemorative route honouring the Orihuela-born poet will be held on Friday, October 30.
Orihuela will also participate in the fifth European Days of Holy Week and Easter Celebrations. The initiative will include a special programme of guided routes, visits and concerts focusing on the city’s religious heritage and Easter traditions.
Activities will take place principally on October 3, 16, 23, 29 and 31. They will include visits to the Holy Week Museum, the “Good Friday Tradition” route, a guided tour of the Monastery of San Juan accompanied by a concert, a children’s route and an experience entitled “Relics of the Passion”.
Nature and wine tourism will also form an important part of the October programme.
On Saturday, October 3, participants can visit La Pedrera reservoir and the Vega Baja wetlands, followed by a tasting. A new visit to EPSO, including a wine tasting, will be introduced on Saturday, October 10.
The programme will continue on Saturday, October 17, with a guided walk along the Las Colinas ecological trail in Orihuela Costa, highlighting the natural attractions and environmental value of the municipality’s coastal area.
