LA MARINA, SPAIN — What began as an investigation into the financial exploitation and severe abuse of an elderly German couple has exposed an industrial-scale synthetic drug laboratory hidden in a rural garage in Dolores.
The Civil Guard’s Santa Pola Investigation Unit launched “Operation Eternal Dignity” after an Elche social worker sounded the alarm on June 29 regarding the neglect of an 85-year-old woman and her late 87-year-old husband. Investigators revealed that the couple’s 51-year-old Spanish caregiver—hired in 2022—systematically isolated them from family, seized complete control of their assets, embezzled over €50,000, stole jewelry, and coerced the deceased husband into naming him substitute heir.
Beyond financial theft, authorities cited the caregiver for severe mistreatment and physical assault. The couple was left in unsanitary conditions without basic hygiene, and medical personnel reported the caregiver was administering unprescribed Valium to keep the elderly woman sedated.
Surprise Raid Exposes Chemical Lab
Officers arrested the caregiver in the Elche district of La Marina on July 22 on charges of misappropriation, document forgery, assault, and coercion. However, when police searched his residence in Dolores, they stumbled upon an unexpected, highly dangerous setup inside an adjacent garage.
The caregiver claimed he had rented the space to Dutch buyers who were purportedly acquiring the property for €1.4 million. Recognizing the scale of the operation, the Civil Guard secured an expanded search warrant and called in the Organized Crime and Anti-Drug Team (EDOA).
Inside, agents discovered a commercial-grade synthetic drug manufacturing facility equipped with:
- Industrial Equipment: Reaction chambers, advanced ventilation systems, industrial mixers, vacuum filters, drying stations, heaters, and large-capacity storage tanks.
- Hazardous Precursors: 400 liters of methylamine (a key compound in synthetic drug production), 600 liters of dichloromethane solvent, 150 kilograms of sodium bicarbonate, and ethanol, along with hundreds of liters of unlabelled, toxic chemicals.
- Bypassed Power: Illegal hookups directly to the electrical grid to power the heavy machinery.
Specialized HAZMAT personnel were deployed to neutralize and safely haul away the volatile substances. Forensic experts believe the facility was in its final preparatory phase to manufacture synthetic cathinones on an industrial scale.
High-Speed Pursuit and Remand
While officers were guarding the property, a van approached and attempted to enter. When the occupants spotted law enforcement, they sped off, triggering a brief pursuit that ended with their interception in nearby San Fulgencio.
Video intercom footage from the residence corroborated that the two suspects—a Dutch national and an Estonian national—had previously visited the site to set up the lab. Appearing before an Orihuela court charged with drug trafficking, possession of illicit chemical precursors, utility theft, and resisting arrest, both men were remanded in custody without bail.
The caregiver appeared before an Elche judge and was released on bail pending trial. The Civil Guard confirms Operation Eternal Dignity remains active, with further arrests expected as forensic testing continues.
