At the dip in the canal at Dehesa de Campoamor – left or right, you can’t really miss it – Las Ramblas was waiting, looking its usual dramatic self and prompting that familiar mix of sharp intake of breath, nervous laughter and, eventually, painful enjoyment.
It does make you wonder why we don’t play it more often; we shall investigate and may well give it more than one outing in the year. Isabella, as ever, was efficient and welcoming, and her team were superb.
A piece of sad news, we have lost a member this week, John Sørensen, whose partner Wenche passed away earlier this year also. We raised a glass and took a moment to remember him.
We had 29 members and 11 guests join us today – a good, friendly bunch who battled through 34°C humidity but with a fair bit of breeze. The course was in excellent overall condition: the fairways were superb, the greens a little slow and showing some wear, but still challenging enough to keep everyone honest.
We had two matches, the singles won by Darren Hancock beating Darren Strugnell 5&4 and the doubles won by Phil de Lacy and Robin Eastman beating Charlie Jackson and John Simmons 2&1. The finals are looming.
The golf was pretty good, no super high scores and two Eagles from Phil de Lacy and Peter Baldwin. So they join Ian Merga “Five” in the “Five Pointer” clubs. The scores were calculated and are reported as follows:
Gold: Richard Howard (34 points)
Silver: Peter Turbefield (36 points and best score of the day)
Bronze: Lee Eastman (32 points)
Nearest the Pins this week were Guy Wade Palmer (6th), Matt Lowe (10th), Charlie Jackson (12th and 14th although he did come off with a 5 on one of them….) TheTwos pot was shared between Charlie Jackson, Will Hammond and Matt Lowe. The “McBride Bottle” has been added to the Captain’s wine rack (Mick Pryke) and Richard Howard went home very happy winning the football card with West Brom.
