A pioneering digital platform developed in Alicante could transform the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease—using nothing more than a person’s voice.
Researchers from the University of Alicante and ISABIAL have created an innovative system that uses artificial intelligence to identify early signs of Alzheimer’s through speech patterns, offering a fast, non-invasive, and highly accessible diagnostic tool.
How it works
At the heart of the breakthrough is a mobile application that records users’ voices in different scenarios—from reading aloud to answering structured questions or speaking freely. The recordings are then analysed using advanced natural language processing (NLP) and deep learning algorithms.
The system examines subtle vocal and linguistic markers, including tone, pauses, fluency, and semantic richness—features that can reveal early neurological changes long before more obvious symptoms appear.
Detecting the earliest warning signs
Scientists have long known that cognitive decline often first manifests in language. Reduced sentence complexity, longer pauses, and grammatical errors can all signal the onset of neurodegenerative disease.
By training AI models on large datasets, the platform can detect these patterns with increasing precision, enabling earlier and more personalised identification of risk.
Accessible, scalable, and game-changing
One of the most significant advantages of the technology is its accessibility. Designed for both clinical and at-home use, the app removes many traditional barriers to early diagnosis, particularly for people in underserved or remote communities.
The project is led by Miguel Ángel Teruel and Ángel Pérez Sempere, alongside a multidisciplinary team of specialists in artificial intelligence, linguistics, and neurology.
According to the research team, the platform not only aims to improve early clinical detection but also to generate large-scale voice data that could unlock new insights into how language changes relate to brain degeneration—potentially accelerating future treatments.
