Following and update by the Guardia Civil this morning it has now been confirmed that, of the Irish couple reported as being found dead in their Punta Prima home, only the 72-year-old man was actually deceased, while his 73-year-old wife was found still alive and was rushed to hospital.
Police were called to the couple’s property yesterday (Tuesday) morning following a worried neighbour’s alert. Early reports mistakenly claimed the woman had also died, and even misidentified the couple as English. Authorities later confirmed both were Irish, and that the woman was alive and in stable condition.
The couple’s home, on Calle Escorpiones in Punta Prima, Orihuela Costa, became the scene of a grim find. Initial accounts described the pair as “semi-naked,” though police have since stressed there were no signs of violence. The man is believed to have been dead for some time, while his wife, who reportedly has mobility limitations, was taken to Torrevieja Hospital for treatment.
A Guardia Civil Judicial Police Team based in Pilar de la Horadada carried out a technical inspection of the scene, determining that there were no signs of foul play, while qualified medical personnel certified the man’s natural death.
A Civil Guard spokesperson connected to the investigation said this morning:
“Yesterday, December 3, at around 11 a.m., a 72-year-old man was found dead at his Orihuela Costa home. His 73-year-old wife, who requires daily assistance, was present and was taken to hospital. A technical inspection found no evidence of foul play, and medical staff confirmed a natural death.”
The couple’s exact origins in Ireland are not yet known.
This grim discovery follows a similar tragedy earlier this year, when two British pensioners were found dead in their Costa Blanca home near San Fulgencio in February. Like the latest victims, the couple were considered vulnerable and had chronic health conditions.
