Ecovidrio, Spain’s specialist organization for glass recycling, and the Orihuela City Council, in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana, have launched the campaign ‘La Reconquista del Vidrio’ to encourage glass container recycling during the 2025 Moors and Christians festivities.
The campaign aims to raise awareness among citizens—especially festival troupes—about the importance of properly separating glass waste. Decorated glass recycling bins will be placed throughout Orihuela, and environmental educators will be present on July 16 and 17 to inform the public and distribute small gifts.
- On July 16 (afternoon), educators will visit the troupes to promote recycling and hand out campaign-themed gifts.
- On July 17 (morning), a selfie-point will be set up at La Esquina del Pavo. Participants who take a photo there and share it on social media with the hashtag #LaReconquistaDelVidrio, tagging the city council, will receive a gift.
Orihuela competes in the “Atabales” category (for towns with over 2,500 festival participants) alongside 30 other municipalities in the Valencian Community. Winners in each category (Atabales, Darbukas, Dolçaines) will receive a trophy recognizing them as the top glass-recycling town during the festivities.
Participating troupes that actively recycle glass may also enter a draw to win a limited-edition campaign-themed glass dispenser. Additionally, six online contests at www.lareconquistadelvidrio.es will reward correct answers to questions about recycling and the Moors and Christians festival with a collectible mini recycling bin (miniglú).
