July 7, 2025 – The Guardia Civil has arrested a 52-year-old man accused of committing 37 crimes against property and the socioeconomic order, targeting foreign tourists at service areas and along stretches of the AP-7 highway, primarily in the provinces of Alicante, Valencia, and Murcia.

A Serial Offender Who Targeted Foreign Tourists

The investigation, launched by officers from the Villena Main Post’s Investigation Unit and framed within the Safe Tourism Plan, uncovered a criminal pattern affecting numerous foreign visitors. The suspect posed as a lost traveller, approaching tourists with large maps to ask for directions. He used the size of the maps to discreetly cover bags, backpacks, and personal belongings, which he would then steal without the victims noticing.

In several incidents where the victims realized the theft and attempted to recover their belongings, the suspect resorted to violence. In some cases, he caused significant injuries while fleeing in his vehicle, dragging victims as he sped away.

Public Cooperation Was Key to the Arrest

Authorities confirmed the suspect’s identity through victim reports and forensic evidence gathered from various service areas. He frequently changed vehicles, using license plates from different countries and avoiding registration under his name, likely to evade detection. One of these vehicles—used both for escape and transporting stolen items—was seized during the operation.

Further investigation revealed the man had multiple outstanding arrest warrants from several courts, along with a judicial order prohibiting him from leaving the country due to similar past offenses. He was also wanted by several judicial districts for unresolved cases.

It is estimated that over the past year, he stole valuables worth approximately €32,000, including jewellery, mobile phones, identification documents, and other personal items. Authorities do not rule out the possibility of additional victims being identified.

Strengthening Safe Tourism Along a Key Travel Corridor

The suspect, a 52-year-old Romanian national, has been remanded in custody by Villena’s Court of Instruction No. 3. His arrest enhances the safety of roads and service areas along Spain’s Mediterranean coast, particularly the AP-7, one of Europe’s busiest tourist routes.
