CAMBIEMOS PRESS RELEASE

Cambiemos Orihuela Submits Motion to June Council Meeting to Support and Give Visibility to LGTBI Families

The local political group Cambiemos Orihuela has presented a motion for the June municipal plenary session, aimed at promoting visibility and support for LGTBI families.

The initiative responds to what the group describes as a growing marginalization of diverse family structures in the municipality since the coalition between the Partido Popular (PP) and Vox was formed two years ago. Cambiemos Orihuela criticizes the elimination of the LGTBI Council Office and the creation of a new “Department of Family,” which they argue has excluded LGTBI families from public recognition and support.

Councilor and party spokesperson Leticia Pertegal stated:
“Since the so-called ‘Department of Family’—a pet project of Ms. Portugal—was created, LGTBI families have been sidelined. The far-right has imposed a narrow vision of family that does not reflect the diversity of our society. For Vox, only large, traditional Catholic families seem to count.

Over €200,000 a year is funnelled to anti-abortion groups, ultraconservative Catholic associations, and large family organizations that do not represent the reality of Orihuela.

The activities offered by this department cater exclusively to one type of family and exclude others. Not only are these events unappealing and poorly attended, but they also waste public funds that could be better used to genuinely support families in our municipality.”

The party also argues that the current city government—particularly the ruling coalition—deliberately marginalizes LGTBI families, which they see as a clear sign of the growing anti-democratic climate since Vox entered the local government. Cambiemos Orihuela accuses the Partido Popular of compromising on human dignity in order to maintain political stability and appease its coalition partner.

The motion concludes with a strong critique: this administration governs for a select few, not for all residents of Orihuela.
