The City of Orihuela has announced a public tender for the purchase of six new 3,500 kg tipper trucks, aimed at renewing and expanding its aging municipal fleet. The trucks, intended for urban sanitation services, represent an investment of nearly €300,000 (VAT included) under the supervision of the Departments of Procurement and Street Cleaning & Waste Collection (RSU).
This acquisition follows the recent procurement of five new waste collection vehicles, for which the city has already proposed awards. Together, these 11 trucks are part of a comprehensive fleet renewal plan designed to improve service coverage across Orihuela, including rural districts, the urban centre, and Orihuela Costa. The total investment for the combined fleet reaches €1.58 million.
Councillor for Street Cleaning and RSU, Rocío Ortuño, emphasized the urgency of the initiative: “This new tender complements the process started with the five collection trucks. Our current fleet is outdated, frequently breaks down, and incurs high maintenance costs, which hinders daily operations.”
Ortuño highlighted that the new investment is “a major step towards modernizing a service used daily by thousands of residents. A responsive and efficient waste collection system begins with a modern, reliable fleet and well-trained personnel.”
The new trucks will be newly registered and meet stringent environmental standards, including Euro VI emission compliance, low-impact refrigerants, and energy-efficient tires. Safety features will include ABS, ESP, airbags for both driver and passenger, fatigue detection, emergency braking assistance, and improved comfort with air conditioning and Bluetooth connectivity.
The delivery timeline for the vehicles is set at a maximum of six months from contract signing, although shorter delivery times will be considered a competitive advantage in the bidding process. The contract also includes mandatory training for municipal staff and the submission of all required legal and technical documentation.
This move underscores Orihuela’s commitment to improving public services with modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible infrastructure, ultimately enhancing quality of life for residents while protecting the town’s urban and natural environment.
