Renovations in five locations aim to improve safety, functionality, and community use
The Orihuela City Council, through its Department of Sports, has recently carried out improvement works at five sports facilities across the municipality. Notable upgrades include renovations at the sports courts in Orihuela Costa (Calle Aben Humeya), Arneva, and Correntías. These enhancements have been made possible through funding from the Alicante Provincial Council under the “Plan +Cerca 2024” initiative.
The three renovated facilities were in urgent need of repairs to meet essential safety and technical standards for sports practice. In rural districts like Arneva and Correntías, these courts serve as the only available recreational spaces. Their multipurpose nature — hosting not just sports, but also cultural, festive, and social events — has led to their accelerated wear and tear.
In addition to the projects funded through Plan +Cerca 2024, the Sports Department has also used its own resources to refurbish the surface of a basketball court at the Polideportivo del Palmeral and improve the court in the San Isidro neighborhood. These actions are part of an ongoing municipal initiative to comprehensively upgrade public sports infrastructure.

Councillor for Sports, Víctor Sigüenza, emphasized the strategic nature of the work: “We are following a clear and structured plan that allows us to act effectively where improvements are most needed. Every intervention is based on technical assessments and the expressed needs of users and local sports groups.”
These improvements align with the local government’s broader strategy, guided by the Municipal Sports Facilities Master Plan, to provide safe, functional, and inclusive spaces for all residents to enjoy sports and community activities.
