- Six crimes solved in less than a month, all targeting elderly victims through distraction using fake hugs or affectionate gestures
- Stolen items include high-end watches and luxury jewelry worth over €140,000
May 12, 2025 — The Civil Guard has arrested a 38-year-old man and woman suspected of committing multiple thefts using the so-called “hug method,” a tactic used to distract and rob victims—primarily the elderly—through physical contact disguised as affection. Following their court appearance, a judge has ordered their provisional imprisonment.
The arrests took place on May 1 in Calpe, where officers from the town’s main investigative unit noticed a suspicious vehicle driving unusually slowly, with its occupants closely observing elderly pedestrians. Upon checking the vehicle’s registration, officers found it was linked to previous criminal activity. A background check on the two occupants revealed active arrest warrants for a violent robbery that had taken place in Marbella just weeks earlier.
As police detained the pair, they received reports that the same individuals had committed another theft just minutes earlier—stealing two gold chains from a tourist in Calpe by initiating physical contact under the pretense of affection.
Subsequent investigations linked the suspects to at least four other similar incidents dating back to April. These include violent robberies of luxury watches in Jávea, Pilar de la Horadada, and Marbella, as well as thefts of jewelry and watches in La Nucía, Calpe, and Pedreguer. The total estimated financial loss exceeds €140,000.
The suspects were brought before Denia’s Court of Instruction No. 2, which ordered their immediate incarceration.
The “hug method” is a well-known technique used by organized, traveling criminal groups. They often target elderly or vulnerable individuals, using friendly or affectionate gestures to create distraction and then steal valuable items. When met with resistance, these criminals are not hesitant to resort to violence.
The Civil Guard advises the public to remain vigilant in public spaces. Citizens are urged to avoid displaying valuable items, be cautious of unsolicited interactions from strangers, and keep a safe distance from individuals exhibiting suspicious behavior. In case of concern, people are encouraged to ask for help from someone nearby or contact emergency services at 062, available 24/7.
