The Orihuela Costa Council has started cleaning and clearing operations on the final stretch of the Nacimiento River, from the La Glea bridge to its mouth at La Glea beach in Dehesa de Campoamor.
This intervention became necessary due to the uncontrolled accumulation of vegetation, weeds, and waste. “This section falls under State jurisdiction, but given the prolonged inaction in maintaining this part of the river, the Orihuela Coast Council sought and obtained the necessary authorization to proceed with its cleaning,” stated Manuel Mestre, Councillor for the Coast.
Although current legislation assigns responsibility for maintaining this area to the General State Administration, the lack of action prompted the Coastal Council to secure approval from the Alicante Provincial Coastal Service, enabling it to carry out the clean-up using its own resources.
The Nacimiento River, which runs 15.2 kilometres from the Sierra de Escalona through Dehesa de Campoamor, had been neglected in its final section. The river’s low gradient and intermittent water flow had led to excessive vegetation growth, negatively impacting the quality of life for residents and visitors.
The clean-up effort will include clearing vegetation with specialised machinery, removing and disposing of waste, and compacting the soil with light equipment to slow regrowth. Mestre added, “With this initiative, we are eliminating uncontrolled vegetation and restoring a clean, safe, and healthy environment for the residents and visitors of La Glea beach.”
