Officers from the National Police arrested a dangerous fugitive wanted by the Polish authorities in Orihuela.

The fugitive is suspected of belonging to a Polish criminal group dedicated to cross-border smuggling, allegedly participating in the 90s in an armed conflict near the border with the Czech Republic and Germany, called “The Zgorzelec War” or “War of the Spirits”, and control of the smuggling routes.

The detainee had a European Arrest and Surrender Warrant issued by Poland to be tried for the crime of murder. He faces 25 years in prison.

As part of a recent operation by the Central Bureau of Investigation of Poland (CBSP), the body of a man who disappeared in 1997, with obvious signs of violent death by firearm, was located in the Lower Silesian voivodeship. The investigation carried out by the Polish authorities focused on two Polish citizens as the main suspects.

Fearing arrest, they immediately disappeared alerted by the progress of the investigation. Their escape activated the “Shadowhunters”, a CBSP group specialised in locating fugitives, while the Polish National Prosecutor’s Office issued the appropriate European Arrest and Surrender Warrants, in case they had fled the country.

One of them was detained in the Masovian Voivodeship, while the other was suspected of fleeing to Spain. This information was transmitted by the Polish authorities to the Fugitive Tracing Section of the National Police. The investigations carried out together with GRECO Levante and the UDYCO of Alicante led them to a home in Orihuela where the fugitive lived with his partner, and who they hurriedly left a few hours before the arrival of the Spanish police.

Thanks to the fluid and continuous exchange of information with the CBSP, the vehicle used by the fugitive was located and it was confirmed that he had crossed the border between Poland and Germany, deducing that he could return to Spain, after having carried out some procedure related to the crimes that they were imputed to him in his country.

Consequently, and given the danger of the individual, a large surveillance device was arranged in the vicinity of the property that ended with his arrest the moment he got out of the car. Various documentation, cash and three mobile devices were seized from him.
