An earthquake of magnitude 1.8 was registered at 6:55 p.m. in the sea off the coast of Torrevieja and Guardamar on Sunday morning, with an epicentre 9 kilometres deep

Seismic information provided by the National Geographic Institute located the epicentre in the sea, off Lomas del Polo-Pinomar (Guardamar) and La Mata (Torrevieja) at a depth of nine kilometres.

This is the fifth seismic movement, greater than 1.5 degrees, to occur this year in this area of the Alicante coast this year. The previous one was registered on May 10, with a magnitude of 2.6 degrees.

ALREADY 39 EARTHQUAKES REGISTERED IN 2023

The province of Alicante can already account for 39 earthquakes in 2023, compared to 30 in the whole of last year. Tremors are usually registered as earthquakes when they exceed 2 degrees of magnitude. La Vega Baja is the second area with the highest activity and seismic risk on the peninsula where many dozens of micro-earthquakes are regularly recorded annually.

On this occasion it was felt by the public more by a sensation of “noise” than by a tremor itself.
