Orihuela — Orihuela Council’s Health Department is reinforcing its pest control and prevention campaigns as rising temperatures increase the risk of insect and rodent infestations across the municipality.
The department, led by councillor Irene Celdrán, carries out pest prevention work throughout the year, but efforts are being stepped up ahead of the hotter months, when cockroaches, rodents and other pests are more likely to spread.
The current campaign is already under way and focuses on preventive treatment and control measures targeting cockroaches and rodents in the public network and municipal spaces.
The Health Department runs three scheduled campaigns each year in schools, nursery schools and municipal buildings. It also responds on an ongoing basis to reports and incidents raised throughout the year at municipal facilities or other locations in the municipality.
Celdrán said the council maintains control and prevention work all year round, while also responding to reports from residents and municipal services.
“With the arrival of hot weather, we are reinforcing these measures because high temperatures encourage the spread of insects and rodents,” she said.
The councillor also stressed the importance of public cooperation in preventing health and hygiene problems linked to pests.
“Cleanliness, avoiding the build-up of waste and keeping certain areas in good condition are essential measures to prevent the appearance of pests,” Celdrán said.
The campaign also includes advice for residents on how to prevent cockroaches and rodents from appearing in homes, communal garages and private spaces.
Recommendations include maintaining strict cleaning routines in kitchens and damp areas, avoiding the accumulation of food waste or rubbish, keeping inspection chambers and drains in good condition, and checking poorly ventilated or damp areas where insects and rodents may breed.
The Health Department said all treatments used comply with current health regulations and are applied by specialist staff using authorised and safe products, in accordance with established protocols to protect public health.
