A 27-year-old man has been arrested after more than 3.5 kilograms of cocaine were discovered concealed inside his luggage at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, in a significant anti-smuggling operation led by the Guardia Civil.
The operation began when officers identified a suspicious suitcase travelling as “rush luggage”—unaccompanied baggage that arrives on a different flight from its owner. The irregularity triggered a targeted inspection within the airport’s customs control area.
Officers from the Fiscal and Border Analysis and Investigation Unit (UDAIF) flagged anomalies in the bag and requested the airline contact its owner, asking him to attend the airport for further checks. Upon his arrival, inconsistencies in his statements raised further suspicion.
In the presence of the suspect, officers opened the suitcase and uncovered a briefcase containing a sophisticated concealment system. The drugs were hidden within a double lining and multiple secret compartments. A total of 3,580 grams of cocaine was seized.
Subsequent investigations revealed that both the suspect and the luggage had followed an international travel route originating in South America, with multiple stopovers before reaching Spain—an established trafficking pattern used to evade detection.
The man has been formally arrested on suspicion of offences against public health and smuggling. He has been brought before the investigating court in Elche, which has ordered his remand in custody pending further proceedings.
Authorities have highlighted the operation as part of ongoing efforts to combat international drug trafficking networks operating through major European transport hubs.
