TORREVIEJA (October 22, 2025).
Torrevieja’s new municipal animal shelter is expected to begin operations in the first quarter of 2026, Mayor Eduardo Dolón announced during a visit to the construction site on Avenida de los Nenúfares. The project, currently over 40% complete, represents a municipal investment of €1,412,330 (VAT included), and is being carried out by the construction company CONSTRUCCIONES URDECON S.A.

Mayor Dolón confirmed that all animal housing units have now been completed and that, later this week, animals from the existing shelter will be relocated to the new premises. This will free up space to continue building the main facility, which will include a veterinary clinic, operating room, reception area, meeting rooms, offices, storage areas, and a laundry for animal care.

The first phase—focused on constructing new enclosures for the animals—is nearly finished. Meanwhile, preparations are under way to safely remove asbestos and demolish the old kennels, making room for the main building and improving access for street-cleaning service vehicles and gas supply stations.

The Animal Welfare Department has also confirmed that procurement procedures are in progress to acquire medical equipment and furnishings needed for the shelter’s full operation.

Once opened, the shelter will operate 365 days a year and will include a total of 64 enclosures: 36 for dogs, 20 for cats, and 8 isolation units. It will be able to accommodate more than 35 dogs and up to 160 cats.

Mayor Dolón emphasized the importance of providing modern, comfortable facilities to ensure animal welfare. He also highlighted the city’s financial commitment to animal care, which totals nearly €2 million—covering construction costs and €642,136 allocated for animal care services over the next two years. This service will operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
