The PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party) has criticized the lack of planning behind the renovation works at Orihuela’s two largest playgrounds — Glorieta Gabriel Miró and Severo Ochoa Park. The works, originally scheduled to finish by May 10, remain incomplete. Councilor María García described the project as “poorly managed and completely unplanned,” pointing out that a job meant to last 8 weeks is now heading toward 5 months. She criticized the government for closing both parks at once, leaving children without recreational spaces during the Easter holidays, despite knowing about delays.
The PSOE had previously warned of delays in starting the project. The company responsible later requested an extension, citing problems with the supply of playground equipment. While a new deadline was set for May 10, the parks are still closed, with no clear communication from the government about the delay or new completion date.
García also noted that the playground renovation is funded by a 2023 grant. The contract was awarded in November, construction started in December, and yet, five months later, the parks remain unfinished. She criticized the local government’s slow handling, inability to meet deadlines, and failure to manage public funds effectively.
Additionally, García highlighted the general neglect of other parks in the city. Although the Councillor for Infrastructure, Víctor Valverde, had promised a yearly investment of €60,000 for park improvements, García claims that no visible progress has been made. She emphasized the urgent need for shaded areas, water fountains, and public toilets in parks, particularly due to rising temperatures.
The PSOE demanded that the ruling PP (People’s Party) take responsibility for the delays and broken promises, and start prioritizing families and children. García concluded by saying it’s shameful that Orihuela residents must leave the city to find decent playgrounds.
