Torrevieja City Council is set to earn a windfall of €1.4 million over the next four years from leasing beach bar concessions—four times more than the minimum rent initially set in the public tender. The seasonal contracts, covering food and beverage services along the city’s beaches, were awarded despite the process being launched late, just before Easter.
The tender involved ten lots—each representing a beach bar—distributed across three beaches: seven on La Mata, two on Los Náufragos, and one on Los Locos. All lots carried an identical starting bid of €8,060 annually. While other municipalities, like Orihuela, tailor rental fees by location, Torrevieja applied a flat rate across the board. Over four years, the minimum income projected was €322,400. However, strong bids pushed the final figure well beyond that, reaching a total of €1.4 million.
The standout bid came from Lot 6 on La Mata beach, which will yield over €444,000 for the city—more than ten times the minimum. Lot 5 on the same beach followed with €180,000, while Los Náufragos beach’s Lot 3 came in third at €128,200. The lowest bid was €45,000 for Lot 10, also on La Mata.
Each concession must maintain a uniform setup: a 70-square-meter footprint including a 20 m² bar, 50 m² terrace, and a 10 m² restroom. Operators are required to dismantle the structures at the end of each season, which runs from March 15 to October 31.
The Local Government Board is expected to confirm the final awards in its upcoming meetings, officially closing a highly profitable tender for the city.
