Torrevieja Mayor Eduardo Dolón and International Residents Councillor Gitte Lund met on Thursday with Valeria Nastashenko, the Advisor at the Ukrainian Embassy in Spain.
The meeting addressed key issues of concern for the Ukrainian community in the city. Torrevieja currently has nearly 10,000 registered Ukrainian citizens, making it one of the largest Ukrainian communities in Spain.
During the meeting, Valeria Nastashenko showed interest in the efforts that the Torrevieja Town Hall is making to support the integration of Ukrainian citizens in the city.
Mayor Eduardo Dolón shared the various actions taken by different departments, including International Residents, Social Welfare, Citizen Participation, and Education, all of which are involved in ensuring the well-being of the Ukrainian community.
He also emphasized the strong relationship and collaborative work between the Town Hall and the Torrevieja Ukrainian Association, which has been especially close since the onset of the war in February 2022.
Following the mass arrival of Ukrainian citizens, the Torrevieja Town Hall provided the Ukrainian Association with all the necessary resources to expedite the paperwork for residence permits in Spain, enrol children in schools, and offer Ukrainian-language classes in local schools.
Additionally, they provided direct financial aid, along with the shipment of food, clothing, and medicines to Ukraine, thanks to the solidarity of Torrevieja citizens and businesses.
One of the main topics discussed during the meeting was the establishment of the long-announced House of Ukraine in Torrevieja, which has yet to be established.
The Ukrainian Embassy Advisor informed the Mayor that the Ukrainian government would collaborate in its creation.
