Guardamar del Segura Municipal archaeologist, Antonio García Menárguez, from Bajo Segura, has sadly passed away.
Antonio was instrumental in unearthing from the sands and hillocks the imprint of Phoenician, Roman, Arab and medieval Christian ancestors.
His love for his region transcended everything as he became an active defender of the Sierra de Escalona and the Dehesa de Campoamor.
He was in love with the sunsets in the lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja, admirer of the landscape of the beaches and dunes of Guardamar, an ancient navigator of the Torrevieja coast, down through Cabo Roig and Mar Menor.
In his last collection as a photographer of landscapes, it is as if an ancient Phoenician navigator, a Sufi ascetic, were behind the lens capturing the images.

Pilar Gay, who works at Guardamar Town Hall, paid tribute to him, saying, “Those of us who lived with you will know where to look for you, at any sunset, in La Rabita, in the Museum or on any beach that you and Rosarito liked so much, in your daughters, in your Choir, in some play. I have learned a lot from you.”
Pablo Perales said: “I will always remember Antonio Garcia Menarguez as the man who, helping us to look for orchids, found an Arab archaeological site, almost by accident.
“May your totem guide you wherever you go and may we meet at twilight one day, when the hooting begins.”
