Do you have time on your hands? Would you like to see your name in lights? The Leader is seeking enthusiastic local reporters to strengthen its coverage of communities across the Vega Baja.
We are particularly interested in people based in or near Rojales and San Fulgencio who have strong local knowledge, good community contacts and an interest in the issues that matter to residents.
Previous journalism experience is helpful but not essential. More important are curiosity, reliability, confidence when speaking to people and the ability to write clear, accurate English.
We will devote a page to each of the two areas, with both carrying two or three local news stories, community updates or human-interest features.
Rojales and Central Vega Baja
The reporting area would include:
Rojales, Ciudad Quesada, Benijófar, Formentera del Segura, Heredades, Algorfa, La Finca Golf, Los Montesinos and Entre Naranjos.
San Fulgencio and Northern Vega Baja
The reporting area would include:
San Fulgencio, La Marina Urbanisation, La Marina village, El Pinet, Guardamar del Segura, El Raso, Dolores, Catral, Daya Nueva, Daya Vieja and San Isidro.
Potential Subjects
Reporters would be encouraged to develop their own contacts and story ideas, covering subjects such as:
- Local government, planning and public services
- Community groups, charities and residents’ associations
- Crime, policing, healthcare and public safety
- Local events, entertainment, culture and sport
- Business, tourism and environmental issues
- Human-interest stories and local achievements
This is an opportunity to become The Leader’s eyes and ears in your community, highlighting local successes, investigating residents’ concerns and ensuring that smaller towns and urbanisations receive the coverage they deserve.
Applicants should have a good command of written English, access to email and a smartphone or camera. The ability to travel within the relevant reporting area would be an advantage.
