Public frustration is mounting over the deteriorating state of the La Loma Health Center in Torrevieja, as calls intensify for long-promised renovations and improvements. Despite funding being allocated in the 2024 regional budget, no visible progress has been made.
On Wednesday, the Platform for Public Health gathered around fifty concerned citizens to protest outside the facility, demanding urgent investment to renovate, expand, and modernize the center. Activists highlighted that La Loma serves as Torrevieja’s only 24-hour Primary Care Emergency Center, yet fails to meet even basic infrastructure and healthcare standards.
Reported structural deficiencies include water leaks during heavy rain, cracks in the walls, falling ceiling debris, malfunctioning air conditioning, outdated furniture, and severely limited space. On the clinical side, residents are voicing concerns over delayed appointments, overcrowded emergency rooms, unfilled staff positions, and slow response times to medical absences.
The health workers’ union CCOO previously raised similar concerns. In March, the Torrevieja branch of Comisiones Obreras issued a statement warning of the center’s rapid deterioration and the urgent need for repairs. Weeks earlier, debris had fallen from the emergency room ceiling, forcing a temporary shutdown of the area.
Although the 2024 regional budget included investments aimed at improving healthcare infrastructure—including hospital expansions and new health centers—the La Loma project remains stalled. Protesters are now urging the regional government to act without delay and fulfill its commitments to improve conditions for both patients and staff.
