Torrevieja’s ruling Partido Popular (PP) has defended its plans to expand green spaces, plant hundreds of trees and create more shaded areas across the city, arguing that many of the improvements demanded by the Socialist opposition are already included in municipal projects.

During the council meeting on 26 October, PP spokesperson Federico Alarcón presented an amendment seeking to replace a PSOE motion on green infrastructure, urban tree planting and shade provision.

Alarcón insisted that the council was already developing a coordinated network of green corridors linking public spaces, including a proposed pedestrian route stretching from Villa Amalia to Los Locos beach via the Eras de la Sal, Paseo Vista Alegre, Paseo de la Libertad and Paseo Juan Aparicio.

One of the flagship projects is the redevelopment of the Eras de la Sal and International Habaneras Auditorium, which will incorporate more than 5,000 square metres of green areas and flowerbeds, together with over 180 trees and palms. The planting scheme includes tamarisk, mulberry trees and pines to provide natural shade.

More Than 500 Trees for New Park

At Alto de la Casilla, plans include 537 trees, 12,270 shrubs, 1,540 additional plants and 4,844 square metres of grass, alongside shaded seating areas, children’s playgrounds and sports facilities.

Together with Sector 25, the developments will provide approximately 80,000 square metres of public open space.

Meanwhile, the redevelopment of Paseo de la Libertad will more than triple its landscaped areas, increasing them from 450 to 1,550 square metres.

Plans for the port and fairground area also include 12 benches with plant-covered pergolas and three large permanent pergolas, designed to provide additional shade while maintaining space for public events.

The council is also preparing proposals to improve shade in school playgrounds and along Paseo Juan Aparicio.

Alarcón accused the Socialists of overlooking work already undertaken by municipal technicians, maintaining that their proposals largely duplicate measures incorporated into existing schemes.

The PP also called on the Spanish Government to complete outstanding coastal improvement projects around the western breakwater, Acequión, Los Náufragos and Lo Ferrís to strengthen pedestrian connections and green corridors in the south of Torrevieja.

The ruling party maintains that its programme will deliver a greener, more pedestrian-friendly city, with additional vegetation and shaded public spaces designed to improve residents’ comfort, particularly during the hot summer months.
