The Department of Infrastructure has reported to the Local Police the theft of a significant amount of public lighting cable in the district of El Escorratel, to the northeast of Orihuela The theft took place at the end of last week and over the weekend.

The affected areas are mainly around Senda Masquefa and the CV-930 road, where approximately 800 linear metres of electrical cable were stolen. The stolen material includes both underground cabling and sections of overhead wiring, leaving numerous streetlights out of service.

The council has warned that this type of crime not only creates a substantial financial cost for the municipality, but also directly affects residents, several of whom have been left without public lighting for days.

The Department of Infrastructure has confirmed that although some replacement material is currently in stock, it is not enough to immediately replace all the stolen cabling. As a result, urgent procedures have already begun to purchase the necessary materials and restore the service as quickly as possible.

The incident has also been formally referred to the Local Police, particularly because similar cable thefts have occurred repeatedly in the area.

Infrastructure councillor Víctor Valverde has called for public cooperation and urged residents to report any suspicious activity, especially at night, to the Local Police or other security forces immediately.

Valverde said that neighbourhood cooperation is essential to stopping these crimes, which have a direct impact on local residents.
