Cambiemos Orihuela has strongly criticised what it says is a widespread heating crisis affecting schools across the municipality. According to the group, boiler failures, lack of maintenance and fuel shortages are now “a generalised problem,” with at least five centres unable to start their heating systems just as winter arrives.
The situation follows more than a month without a functioning boiler at CEIP Playas de Orihuela, despite repeated appeals from families and staff. Cambiemos maintains that this case “was only the tip of the iceberg,” arguing that recent events confirm “a serious lack of foresight and management” by both the Councillor for Education and the municipal government.
Several schools are reportedly in critical condition. CEIP Virgen de la Puerta has received no diesel supply, CEIP Josefina Manresa and CEIP Andrés Manjón have missed essential inspections, CEIP Fernando Loaces shows clear signs of neglect, and CEIP Miguel Hernández still has a broken boiler with no repair planned. Some schools, the group adds, have been forced to carry out repairs themselves due to the lack of official response.
Spokesperson Quique Montero says the situation demonstrates “the incompetence of the current government,” noting that providing safe, heated classrooms “is a basic obligation.” With students and teachers allegedly attending lessons wrapped in coats and blankets, the group calls the situation “unacceptable.”
Cambiemos is now demanding the immediate resignation of Councillor Vicente Pina and insists it will not allow “the further deterioration of public education in the municipality.”
