Villajoyosa has officially prohibited smoking on all of its beaches, becoming the latest Costa Blanca resort to join the Valencian Community’s Smoke-Free Beaches network. The decision, led by the town council, covers all 13 beaches and coves in the area, including popular spots such as Bol Nou, La Caleta, Paradís, and Varadero.
The move, championed by Councillor for Health Maite Sánchez, aims to create healthier spaces free from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke and its residue. “We want to ensure that our beaches are safe and clean environments for both residents and visitors,” Sánchez explained. “Tobacco not only harms the health of bathers but also pollutes the sand and sea, leaving behind a negative environmental impact.”
The initiative includes raising the ‘Smoke-Free Beach’ flag across Villajoyosa’s coastline, with visible signs reminding beachgoers of the new rules. In addition, public information campaigns will be launched to promote awareness about the dangers of smoking and its environmental consequences.
Sánchez said that “by joining the Smoke-Free Beaches programme, Villajoyosa strengthens its commitment to sustainability and public health, encouraging visitors to enjoy a cleaner and more respectful beach experience this summer”.
