The Orihuela City Council has opened the bidding process for a new contract aimed at preventing mosquito and chironomid infestations throughout the municipality, as announced by Councillor for the Environment, Noelia Grao. The service will focus on both preventative measures and responsive actions to control outbreaks.

The contract has a total value of €402,596.04 (VAT included) for a three-year term, with the possibility of a one-year extension, renewable up to two years, bringing the maximum potential contract value to €554,540 (excluding VAT).

According to Councillor Grao, the service will cover all known problem areas or “hotspots” where mosquito infestations are likely to develop, with flexibility to respond to other mosquito species not currently included in the scope but that could pose a future threat.

Priority will be given to areas with frequent stagnant water such as irrigation ditches, canals, ravines, fountains, and riverbeds. Treatment will also be carried out along the Segura River and its banks, as well as in urban zones and populated areas, including dispersed settlements, rural roads, farmsteads, and parks.

“The goal of the Department of the Environment is to reduce and control the presence of organisms that appear cyclically across the municipality, affecting residents’ quality of life,” Grao stated. “In some cases, these insects can even pose a risk to public health.”

All relevant information regarding the bidding process can be found on the official Procurement Platform, and the deadline for submissions is May 5, 2025.
