Despite the contract allowing for a postponement due to weather conditions, the Department of Tourism failed to make any decision regarding the matter. “In the end, the responsibility of deciding whether to participate under such conditions fell entirely on the groups and academies themselves, when it should have been a municipal decision based on the safety and well-being of everyone involved.”
The Socialist Municipal Group believes that, once again, this government has failed to make necessary decisions. Yesterday evening, Orihuela held its Carnival Parade, an event filled with excitement and dedication from the participating academies. “However, it should have been postponed, as the rain started after 5:00 PM and continued past 6:30 PM—the scheduled start time of the event. This turned the asphalt into a hazardous surface for the dancers, putting their safety at risk.”
Councilor María García stated: “It is incomprehensible that, despite the contract allowing for postponement due to weather conditions, the Department of Tourism took no action. The responsibility of deciding whether to proceed in these conditions was left entirely to the participating groups and academies, when the city should have prioritized the safety and well-being of everyone involved—most of whom were children as young as six years old.”
García criticized the “lack of foresight and leadership” from the Councilor for Tourism, Mr. Mestre, who was reportedly absent at a critical moment. “This clearly demonstrates a lack of responsibility in managing such an important event for the city. Other municipalities, like Callosa de Segura, made the responsible decision to postpone their carnival in response to the adverse weather conditions, showing a commitment to public safety.”
According to the councilor, a “clear example of responsibility” was set by the Municipal Dance School of Orihuela, which moved its performance to La Lonja, allowing children to safely showcase their work to their families. “This initiative reflects a commitment to safety and respect for the effort of the participants.”
García concluded: “It is unacceptable that Orihuela continues to fail in making timely decisions when the situation demands it. Events like the Carnival should take place under optimal conditions, allowing participants and spectators to enjoy them to the fullest. There are no excuses—the contract allowed for postponement, and the safety of the children should have been the priority.”
