An image that defines the value of our biodiversity, a pod of about ten dolphins was captured on Wednesday swimming close to the mouth of the Port of Torrevieja. The photos were taken by Julio Jesús Añel and shared on the MeteOrihuela twitter by the geographer and meteorologist Pedro José Gómez.

In the images released on May 10, a group of approximately a dozen bottlenose dolphins ( tursiops truncatus) can be seen playing in the bay.

Although this is not something out of the ordinary, as the Mediterranean has been home to dolphins, climate change is making it less and less common to see pods of cetaceans clearly and up close.

But from Dénia, to Benidorm, Tabarca, San Juan and up and down the length of La Vega Baja… every year there are occasional dolphin sightings, providing a reminder to us all that we should take care of our sea so that these images don’t become just a memory.
