This week the Warblers were at Oliva Nova on a breezy cold day with sporadic sunshine. We found the course in good condition and the greens very slippery in speed making scoring very difficult indeed. With a near full house of 35 players of which two were guests Stephen Longbottom and Malcolm Monti. Both were made to feel very welcome among the Members and were presented with Orba Warblers golf balls.
Today was the playing of our Oliva Cup a very prestigious stableford competition with places from 1st to 6th and to make the day complete a very nice sponsorship from a fairly new member David Baggaley, thank you David.
Our winner today was Sylvia Mortensen (Hcap 20.4)who was very surprised to win with a below par 33pts and that was only just on countback from Bob Edwards (Hcap 8.4)also with 33pts and placed second. It showed how difficult the course was playing with only two points between the first seven places. In third place with 32pts on countback was Steve Smith (Hcap 4.6) just pipping Chris Williamson (Hcap 8.5) who was fourth also with 32pts. In fifth and sixth were our only Short wearers Glynn “pinky” Braidley (Hcap 9.6) 31pts on countback from Dave “shorty” Knight (Hcap 9.3) with also 31pts.
There were four nearest the pins on holes 3, 6, 11 and 16 and was won by Glynn Braidley, Dave Knight, Sylvia Mortensen and Barbara Pollitt respectively. There were three two’s achieved today by Steve Smith on hole 3 Steve Cliffe on hole 11 and Barbara Pollitt on hole 16.
The two longest drives were won by Steve Smith and Barbara Pollitt on hole 8. There was a very tough and tight semi-final doubles match between Glynn Braidley and Roger Vicars against Fred Cooley and Sheila Dindar. Winning by just 1up was Glynn and Roger. The football card winning team was Leicester and was won by Big Ron Steele who kindly donated it all to the Captain’s Charity, thank you Ron. Well done to all our winners today “i couldn’t be more pleased for you all”.
Next Wednesday 30th November the Warblers travel to Alicante for a stableford competition. The first tee is 10-00am so please arrive by 9-15am for registration.
