Torrevieja is a municipality in the province of Alicante, community of Valencia, Spain. It is a seaside destination on the Costa Blanca (White Coast).

Torrevieja is around 50 kilometres south of the city of Alicante and had an official population of 105,000 in 2012 which decreased to around 85.000 in 2016. (The actual population is considerably higher than the census due to the number of unregistered foreign people living in the area.) Torrevieja was originally a salt-mining and fishing village as it is located between the sea and two large salt lakes (Las Salinas). It is this which caused the World Health Organisation to praise Torrevieja’s microclimate as one of the healthiest in the world.

The local economy has grown rapidly over the years due to the tourist industry and the construction boom of the early 2000’s. As well as Spanish residents, there is a strong contingent of British, Irish, Germans and Scandinavians, many of whom live there all the year round. There are also many Spanish people who have a second home in the city which results in a population of some 300.000 people during the summer months.
