The General University Hospital of Elche is going to become the reference hospital centre for the city of Elche, Crevillente, Orihuela and Torrevieja, as well as for the municipalities of Aspe, Hondón de las Nieves, and Hondón de los Frailes.

This is stated in the Decree Law approved by the Plenary Session of the Consell, which met in Alicante, and which, as explained by the Generalitat Valenciana in a statement, contemplates measures “aimed at guaranteeing comprehensive health care and under conditions of equity in the Valencian Health System”.

Within the framework of this Decree Law, eight interdepartmental health groups (ASI) have been created as organisational entities that will allow the shared use of resources between the health departments that comprise them.

One of these groups is the so-called ‘Alicante-Sur’, which includes the health departments of Elche-Hospital General, Elx-Crevillent (that of Hospital del Vinalopó), Torrevieja and Orihuela.

In the ASI ‘Alicante-Sur’, the reference hospital will be the General University of Elche.

The creation of these new health groups is an extraordinary measure that will have a greater impact on health personnel, both in health centres and hospitals, who will be able to work in two health areas at the same time, than in the assistance facet itself.

The Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, has explained that it is a healthcare structure that is intended to guarantee the right to comprehensive health protection, in the face of the increasing difficulties encountered in filling positions in certain health specialties in some health departments, especially in areas geographically distant from large urban centres.

The Decree Law declares the health departments of Elda, Orihuela and Torrevieja as an area of shortage of professionals in the province of Alicante.
