Alicante is set to embrace the extraordinary this summer as Cirque du Soleil brings its acclaimed production Kurios: Cabinet of Curiosities to San Juan Beach. The iconic big top will open its doors from July 16 to August 23, inviting audiences into one of the Canadian company’s most imaginative and technically sophisticated shows.
Nearly 50 artists representing more than 20 nationalities will take to the stage, supported by a touring team of around 120 professionals from 33 countries. Together, they form part of a global production that has captivated audiences worldwide since its premiere in Montreal in 2014. Now in its 35th creation, Cirque du Soleil’s Kurios has already amassed close to 3,500 performances and attracted some seven million spectators across the globe.
Speaking at the official presentation at Alicante City Hall, Councillor for Culture Nayma Beldjilali described the arrival of the show as both a cultural and strategic milestone. “It is an honour to host a company of this calibre,” she said, highlighting not only its artistic significance but also its ability to generate tourism and elevate Alicante’s profile on the international cultural stage. This year, the city joins a prestigious tour circuit that includes Seville, Bilbao, Málaga, Barcelona and Madrid.
The visit also reflects a growing partnership between Cirque du Soleil and the Alicante City Council. With a future return already scheduled for 2028, the collaboration underscores the city’s commitment to establishing itself as a regular destination for world-class productions. “Our aim is to bring the very best to Alicante,” Beldjilali added, noting the wider economic and reputational benefits such events deliver.
At the heart of Kurios lies a richly imagined narrative set in the mid-19th century during the height of the Industrial Revolution. The story follows an ambitious scientist who becomes convinced that an invisible world exists—one where imagination reigns supreme. When he unlocks the gateway to this hidden realm, time appears to stand still, and the stage transforms into a fantastical universe populated by extraordinary characters. The production blends acrobatics, humour and visual storytelling with a striking steampunk aesthetic, creating a constantly evolving spectacle that rewards attentive viewing.
“It’s a show where something is always happening,” explained Itxaso Barrios, the company’s marketing manager. “There is so much detail that audiences often feel they need to look in every direction at once.”
The scale of the production is equally impressive behind the scenes. With more than 460 props integrated into the performance and a complex stage design that shifts seamlessly throughout, Kurios stands as one of Cirque du Soleil’s most intricate touring shows. Adding a local connection, Alicante-born clown David García plays the central role of the scientist, further strengthening ties between the production and its host city.
The big top, which seats approximately 2,400 spectators per performance, will operate on a fixed schedule with no extensions possible due to the demands of the international tour. Early ticket sales have already shown strong local interest, with demand expected to rise further as the summer season attracts visitors from across Spain and beyond.
Beyond its artistic appeal, the arrival of Kurios is also expected to deliver tangible economic benefits. Cirque du Soleil anticipates employing around 180 local workers in areas such as production, logistics and customer service, contributing to the regional economy.
As anticipation builds, Alicante is preparing to host a spectacle that transcends conventional entertainment. For five weeks, San Juan Beach will be transformed into a world of wonder—a place where imagination takes centre stage and the impossible feels within reach.
