The Coastal Department of Orihuela has completed the clearing and cleaning of the final stretch of the Nacimiento River, from the La Glea bridge to its mouth at La Glea beach in the Dehesa de Campoamor.
According to Coastal Councillor Manuel Mestre, the area, which falls under the jurisdiction of the national government, had deteriorated significantly due to an overgrowth of vegetation. The intervention has restored a natural space that was in poor condition, with an excess of plant matter and debris contributing to an unsanitary environment.
The Coastal Department obtained the necessary permits from the Alicante Provincial Coastal Service to carry out the work using its own resources. Mestre explained that the team removed brush, branches, and especially the dense growth of reeds that had overtaken the area.
The Nacimiento River, which runs 15.2 kilometres from the Sierra de Escalona, flows through the natural setting of the Dehesa de Campoamor. Its final stretch had been particularly neglected, worsened by the riverbed’s low gradient and intermittent water flow, which encouraged uncontrolled vegetation growth.
The cleanup involved the use of specialized machinery to cut and remove vegetation, proper waste disposal, and light compaction of the terrain to prevent rapid regrowth.
As a result, the river environment is now significantly improved—cleaner, safer, and more welcoming for both residents and visitors, especially in preparation for the summer season, Mestre concluded.
