The Civil Guard has arrested a 37-year-old man in Novelda (Alicante) accused of stealing personal belongings and bank cards from company locker rooms and using the stolen cards to buy lottery coupons from the National Organization for the Blind (ONCE).
The investigation, dubbed Operation “Cortuna,” began after workers from a company in Agost reported thefts on September 29. Similar incidents soon emerged in nearby towns, prompting officers to launch a broader inquiry.
According to the Civil Guard, the suspect disguised himself as an employee—often wearing reflective vests or work uniforms—to enter company facilities unnoticed. Once inside, he stole personal effects and bank cards, later using them for fraudulent purchases.
He was arrested on October 27 in Novelda and faces 13 counts of theft and 11 counts of fraud committed in several towns, including Monforte del Cid, Castalla, and Monóvar. The vehicle allegedly used in the crimes was also seized.
The man, who has previous convictions for similar offenses, was brought before the Court of Instruction in Novelda and released under precautionary measures.
Authorities urged the public and companies to report incidents promptly and strengthen security measures, stressing that community cooperation is vital for preventing and solving such crimes.
