It was a heist gone hilariously wrong in San Pedro del Pinatar when three masked men stole a safe — only to crash their getaway car with the loot still perched on the bonnet.
The bizarre break-in took place around 2 a.m. on Monday at a well-known fish and seafood distribution company. The thieves stormed the premises, ripped out the metal safe, and made their escape in a grey Mercedes C-Class.
But in their rush to flee, the crooks didn’t even load the safe inside the car — instead, they balanced it on the hood and sped off into the night. Their getaway didn’t last long. Minutes later, the Mercedes crashed, leaving the scene looking more like a comedy sketch than a crime.
The trio ditched the wrecked car — and the safe — before vanishing on foot. When officers from the Civil Guard and Local Police arrived, they found the smashed Mercedes abandoned with the dented safe still at the scene.
Police have recovered the loot, though it remains unclear whether the thieves managed to open it or if there was any cash inside.
Investigators believe the gang may be part of a group specialising in robberies across the Mar Menor area. The hunt for the hapless thieves is ongoing.
