Orihuela has announced a major investment of nearly €600,000 to modernize the municipality’s outdated traffic light system, many of which are over 40 years old. The comprehensive upgrade includes the replacement of old equipment with LED technology, remote management systems, and enhanced accessibility features.

Councillor Mónica Pastor emphasized the urgency of the project, citing both safety and functionality concerns with the current infrastructure. “Our traffic lights date back to the last century, with obsolete parts and poor visibility. This upgrade is not optional—it’s a matter of public safety,” she stated.

The new system will bring several improvements:

  • Energy-efficient LED lights to enhance visibility and reduce maintenance costs.
  • Remote management technology allowing real-time control and fault detection by the city’s technical teams.
  • Upgraded wiring and infrastructure, resolving long-standing issues such as water infiltration during heavy rain.
  • Integrated acoustic signals to assist visually impaired pedestrians and ensure compliance with accessibility laws.
  • More efficient traffic flow with optimized pedestrian crossing times and smarter traffic regulation during peak hours.

As part of the plan, structurally sound poles will be refurbished and repainted to maintain visual consistency and reduce costs.

Special enhancements for Orihuela Costa include LED warning signs at pedestrian crossings and digital speed limit signs on main roads—aimed at increasing safety in high-traffic, tourist-heavy areas.

The 10-month project, awarded as a single contract for consistency across the municipality, represents a long-overdue shift to a safer, smarter, and more sustainable traffic control system.
