The Orihuela Council has launched a public tender for the renovation and activation of a Road Safety Education Park in La Ciñuelica (PAU 20), Orihuela Costa.
This project, aimed at promoting traffic safety awareness and education, involves a total investment of €77,546.60 (including VAT), with a base tender budget of €64,088.10 plus €13,458.50 in VAT.
The park responds to longstanding requests from local residents and schools, who have called for a dedicated space to teach road safety. Currently, the site is significantly deteriorated, with worn-out pavement and damaged urban furniture, rendering it unusable for educational purposes.
PLANNED IMPROVEMENTS
Key upgrades include:
Resurfacing the circuit
Installing new traffic signs and urban furniture
Upgrading lighting with three-bulb streetlamps for better visibility
Installing perimeter fencing with secure sliding gates for controlled access and vandalism prevention
Creating rest areas with pergolas, benches, trash bins, and drinking fountains
Building pedestrian pathways for improved accessibility
A mini roundabout and marked pedestrian crossings will be added to enhance the learning of traffic manoeuvres.
NEW FEATURES
The park will also feature:
A dedicated practice area for bicycles and electric scooters, reflecting modern urban mobility needs
Enhanced greenery with tree planting and landscaped zones for shade and environmental improvement
Parking for bicycles and scooters to promote sustainable transport
There will be a theoretical learning zone with informational panels and interactive resources, allowing visitors to learn basic traffic rules before practicing. Low-height traffic lights and specific signage will simulate urban environments safely and effectively.
EDUCATIONAL FOCUS
The park will serve both the general public and local schoolchildren, who will engage in practical activities to learn traffic rules and encourage safe mobility habits from an early age. Local police and road safety organizations will be involved in running workshops and educational sessions.
Councilor Mónica Pastor emphasized the significance of the project, stating:
“This park will be a vital facility for teaching road safety to our children and youth, allowing them to learn practically in a safe environment. We aim for Orihuela Costa to have a leading educational facility that fosters awareness and responsible mobility.”
The construction is expected to last approximately three months and will comply with all current accessibility and safety standards. The park is set to become a regional benchmark, offering a valuable educational resource for schools, families, and organizations promoting road safety.
